520 |a“This report and accompanying poster describe the results of geochemical studies carried out on flood basalts of the High Arctic Large Igneous Province (HALIP). The study area is located near Bunde Fiord, northern Axel Heiberg Island, Nunavut. The study is part of bedrock mapping and sampling carried out under the GEM 2 HALIP Activity. The authors present the first attempt at resolving the composition of primitive magmas by comparing trace element concentrations in the whole rock and in melt inclusions preserved in plagioclase phenocrysts. Under favourable conditions, these primitive, Mg-rich magmas have the potential of generating Ni-Cu-PGE deposits hosted in shallow sills or dykes. The study carries important implications for the economic potential of the HALIP magmatic system in this region of Nunavut”--Provided by publisher.
