5203 |a"Approximately one-quarter of the total North American duck population breeds on the Canadian Prairies. Encroachment of prairie agriculture on waterfowl nesting habitat has been extensive and shows no sign of abating. Whereas this physical disruption of wildlife habitat is all too visible, the effects of pesticides on the quality of waterfowl habitat and directly on waterfowl are not so readily apparent and have largely been ignored. This report is intended to fill that gap. In it we review in detail the ecology of prairie sloughs and waterfowl, assess the overlap between waterfowl nesting and pesticide use, and examine the main threats associated with both insecticides and herbicides as well as the more generic problem of off-site contamination. Finally, we attempt to put all that information together in a series of scenarios and predict the likely impacts of actual pesticide use"--Abstract, p. iii.
