Diet of nestling Tree Swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) near Sudbury, Ontario, summer 1986 / Peter J. Blancher ; Caren L. Furlonger ; Donald K. McNicol. : CW69-5/31E-PDF
"We present some preliminary information on the diet of nestling Tree Swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) northeast of Sudbury, Ontario in 1986. Flies (Diptera) comprised nearly half of the diet items, but aphids (Aphididae), mayflies (Ephemeroptera), dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata), beetles (Coleoptera), and ants and wasps (Hymenoptera) were also important in the diet. Close to half of prey items were aquatic in origin. Of these, mayflies and mollusc shells were more prominent in the diet near wetlands of relatively high pH, than near wetlands of lower pH. Aquatic prey were of larger average size than terrestrial prey. The relative merits of several diet collection methods are discussed"--Abstract, p. i.
