520 |a"The Rail Assisted Bathroom Transfer Device developed by the Society allows disabled users to move between the shower/bathtub and the toilet in a regular sized bathroom, without having to use their wheelchair. The device consists of a seat equipped with rollers mounted on rails. The seat rolls back and forth between the toilet and the shower/tub. The design reduces the number of transfers necessary in standard-sized bathrooms. This project was undertaken to test the performance of the device and to make improvements based on the results. The Rail Assisted Bathroom Transfer Device was tested and evaluated in the G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre and in several homes. At G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre the device was tested with people of different disabilities, age and sizes. The results of G.F. Strong testing were analyzed and modifications made to the second prototype used in home tests. Based on the tests in people’s homes we found the device best suited to all bathrooms where the bath or soaker tub could be connected via rail to the toilet seat. In conclusion, the modifications improved the device and made it marketable"--Abstract.
