Effects of the Nestucca oil spill on seabirds along the coast of Vancouver Island in 1989 / Alan E. Burger. : CW69-5/179E-PDF

"On 23 December 1988, the oil barge Nestucca was damaged off Gray's Harbor, Washington and began leaking oil. The barge was towed 45 km offshore, near to the edge of the continental shelf. About 875,000 litres of Bunker Coil were spilled, leading to widespread oiling of beaches along the coasts of Washington and Vancouver Island, with heavy mortality of seabirds. A total of 10,336 oiled birds were collected on beaches in Washington: 7244 were found dead, 2065 died or were euthanized at treatment centres, and 1027 were cleaned and released (Ford et al.1991)"--Introd.
