"Breeding colonies of Atlantic Puffins (Fratercula arctica) in the northwest Atlantic were severely reduced or eliminated by hunting, egg collecting, habitat destruction, and the introduction of domestic animals throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Federal protection commencing early this century reduced direct hurnan exploitation but negative impacts of oil pollution, accidentaI entrapment in fishing gear, expanding gull populations, and the capelin fishery have renewed concern for the species"--Summary.
