"Although the shores of the St. Lawrence River are a preferred breeding site for waterfowl, no exhaustive survey of all species present at this site during the breeding season had been conducted. In order to fill this gap, a monitoring program was developed to monitor waterfowl breeding pairs in the St. Lawrence system. The objectives of the program are to determine the distribution, breeding populations and population trends for the American Black Duck and other waterfowl species found along the shores of the St. Lawrence River and its main tributaries. From 1990 to 1992, a ground survey of waterfowl breeding pairs was carried out annually in 168 1-km2 quadrats distributed over five regions: Outaouais, Montréal, Québec City, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean and the Estuary"--Abstract, p. iii.
