520 | 3 |a"Seabirds were counted opportunistically from Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) vessels conducting research in the vicinity of the Scott Islands off the northern end of Vancouver Island, between 1981 and 2001. Seabird densities are mapped and patterns of spatial and temporal distribution are identified in order to assess the seasonal extent to which the waters around the Scott Islands are used by marine birds. These analyses revealed extensive use of the region throughout the year by year round residents (six species), by breeders (eleven species) and by non-breeding species(fourteen species). Pooling of the data records over all years confirmed that the marine area around the Scott Islands is of particular importance for Cassin’s and Rhinocerosauklets, Tufted Puffin, Marbled Murrelet, Red-necked Phalarope, Sooty Shearwater, Black-footed Albatross, and Fork-tailed Storm Petrel. The annual and interannual pooled seasonal patterns of seabird use presented in this report confirm that the marine area around the Scott Islands provides consistent forage food organisms for a diverse array of seabird species. Application of this information will greatly assist the Canadian Wildlife Service in meeting its regional, national, and international commitments to the conservation and management of Pacific Canada’s marine bird populations"--Abstract, p. iii. |
