5203 |a"The Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) administers fifteen Migratory Bird Sanctuaries in the Atlantic Region. These sanctuaries play an integral part in the management and protection of migratory birds and range in size from 10 to 2350 hectares. These protected area reviews are conducted periodically to reassess sanctuaries and to update and incorporate any new information that has become available. Reviews are also necessary to ensure that the sanctuaries fulfill their intended purpose and continue to meet a pre-determined set of criteria (see text). Data gaps do exist, thus making evaluation somewhat difficult for some sanctuaries. Sites requiring additional information on the timing, numbers and species of migratory birds have been noted. Of the fifteen regional sanctuaries covered under this review, ten meet all four criteria and only one has been identified for possible delisting"--Abstract.
