"The significance of the small wetlands of the prairies as breeding grounds for North American ducks has long been recognized. While the journals of early travellers across the plains testify to the spectacle provided by countless flocks of waterfowl, it is only during the past two decades that systematic waterfowl censuses have provided precise data . We now know that the sIoughs and potholes of southern Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and adjacent parts of the Dakotas and Montana are the breeding habitat for over two thirds of the continent's most sought-after ducks"--Introd.
