520 |a"The Allium vegetables are members of the Allieae tribe (Alliodeae subfamily) and are cultivated and consumed world-wide. This tribe is represented by one genus (Allium) comprised of over 500 species. In Canada, several Allium vegetables are produced commercially including dry onion (Allium cepa), green onion (A. cepa), shallots (A. cepa var. aggregatum), leeks (A. porrum), garlic (A. sativum) and chives (A. schoenoprasum). In 2015, a total of 7,466 hectares of Allium crops were planted, approximately 6% of the total area planted to vegetable crops in Canada"--p. [1].
