"The Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program (AZMP) was implemented in 1998 to enhance Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s (DFO’s) capacity to understand, describe, and forecast the state of the marine ecosystem. The AZMP derives its information on the marine environment and ecosystem from data collected at a network of sampling locations in each DFO region (Québec, Gulf, Maritimes, and Newfoundland), sampled at a frequency of twice-monthly to once-annually. This report provides an assessment of the distribution and variability of nutrients and plankton on the Scotian Shelf and in the eastern Gulf of Maine, focusing on conditions in 2016. It complements similar assessments for the physical environment of the Maritimes Region, for the pelagic environment in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, for the Newfoundland and Labrador shelves and the Grand Banks, and for the Canadian Northwest Atlantic shelf system as a whole"--Introd., p. 1.
