Every year, several thousand Canadians leave the country to settle elsewhere in the world. Throughout its history, Canadian emigration has raised major issues. The emigration of French Canadians in the second half of the 19th century until the middle of the 20th century and the departure of many highly qualified workers to the United States in the 1990s are two emigration episodes that drew the attention of policy makers, researchers and the Canadian population in general.
