520 | |a"The North American Product Classification System (NAPCS) Canada is a classification of products (goods and services) designed primarily for use in statistical programs. It is Statistics Canada’s official standard for the collection, processing and dissemination of product statistics in its economic, business and trade statistics programs. This includes, for example, statistics on the value of exports and imports by type of product, the value of industry production and consumption by type of product, and industrial product price indices. Statistical classifications are comprehensive structured lists of mutually exclusive categories. In practice, this means that there is always a category in the classification if the object falls within the scope of the classification, and that the object can be classified in only one category. The purpose of standard classifications is to support the integration of data obtained from multiple sources by organizing the documentation, collection, processing, presentation and analysis of data in a systematic manner. Classifications are essential elements of a coherent and efficient statistical system. NAPCS Canada has been developed to support the integration of product statistics. NAPCS Canada 2017 was approved as the departmental standard on September 19, 2016"--Purpose, p. 7. |
