"The health care sector in Canada, since the beginning of this century and especially with the establishment of the public medical care and hospital insurance programs, has been characterized by growing interventions of governments and by a notable increase in expenditures. This situation has caused some concern in government circles and elsewhere. In order to provide some information relevant to decision-making in this area, this paper presents an overview of past trends in health expenditures in Canada and of the possible impact of future demographic developments on expenditures under the medical and hospital insurance programs"--Abstract, p. iii.
