"Over the last decade Canadian cities have seen booms and busts in house prices of a size unprecedented in the postwar period. These have had major impacts on the affordability of home ownership, on construction and on household wealth. This study aims to strengthen the analysis of swings in house prices by providing new indexes and by assessing the usefulness of the average Multiple Listing Service (MLS) price. The new price indexes are based on home owners’ estimates of value, 1990-1993, adjusted to control for differences in the quality of house"--Abstract, p. i.
