"The Urban Transportation Development Corporation (UTDC) was established by the Government of Ontario in the early 1970s. The objectives of the corporation were: (1) to establish a research and development (R&D) capacity for urban transportation systems in Canada, so that there would be domestic production facilities for Canadian municipalities, (2) to permit the results of new developments to be integrated with conventional systems, (3) to exploit and market the results of the R&D programs through the private sector in Canada, (4) to coordinate research activities in the industrial, commercial and academic sectors, and (5) to ensure that Ontario municipalities do not face a monopoly situation in the supply of equipment"--Abstract, p. iv.
