| 520 | |a"During the International Field Year on the Great Lakes (IFYGL) a sequence of experiments was carried out on Lake Ontario wherein it was attempted to measure the temperature structure across three vertical cross sections of the lake simultaneously and continuously for periods of at least four days. Experiments were carried out in July, August, and October of 1972 using up to three research vessels equipped with standard and towed temperature profiling devices. The data have been presented as sequences of cross sections of the lake showing the depths of selected isotherms as functions of horizontal distance and time. The data contain striking examples of both large- and small-scale internal waves, standing and progressive. A very limited discussion of the data in terms of the dynamics of basin-wide internal standing waves is given, since it is intended that this publication be viewed primarily as a data report. Time series plots of isotherm depths from moored temperature profiles are included where they overlap the ship surveys. Data from the coastal chain surveys have been used to extend the measurements shorewards and to verify the ship-based measurements. The instrumentation used to obtain the profiles is described in some detail. A considerable effort has been expended to make the report as complete as possible to facilitate the interpretation of the data for future researchers"--Abstract, xiii. |
