"The Dominion Bureau of Statistics undertook in 1918, at the request of the Honorary Advisory Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, a special survey of Canadian Chemical Industries, one purpose of which was to provide a directory of such industries and their products for the use of the trade. The first edition of this directory was published in 1919. It contained the names, addresses and chemical products of nearly 500 Canadian concerns operating over 600 plants in various parts of the Dominion. The present edition is designed to present a more comprehensive review of these industries than was possible within the time available for the preparation of the first edition"--Preface.
