"A review of the physiological reactions of the human body to atmospheric conditions of excessive heat and humidity is given. The historical development of an index to measure the discomfort associated with such conditions leads to an explanation and description of humidex. A computer programme was used to provide several statistics pertaining to humidex patterns in Ontario, the Canadian province with the greatest frequency of high temperatures and high humidities. Graphs of hourly humidex values and maps of spatial variations of humidex in Ontario are included. On the average, the most severe conditions are likely to occur in mid afternoon in the latter part of July in southwestern Ontario. Suggestions for alleviating discomfort during these times are provided"--Abstract.
