Chronic toxicity of high and low intensity UV disinfected effluents from three sewage treatment plants in Ontario : data report / Q. Rochfort ... [et al.]. : En13-5/98-015E-PDF

"UV irradiation is currently used in disinfection of treated wastewater eflluents as a viable alternative to chlorination, which may lead to chronic toxicity effects of residual chlorine in the aquatic environment. Some current literature supports the hypothesis that UV light can induce changes in certain organic compounds, which become more toxic after irradiation. The determination of chronic toxicity of UV irradiated effluent was initiated by the Ontario Ministry of Environment and Energy (MOEE) and Environment Canada in order to support the continued use of this technology"--Abstract.
