A review of some of the chemical aspects of the formation of coke during thermal hydrocracking of bitumen / K. Belinko and J.M. Denis. : M38-13/77-43E-PDF

"Reaction mechanisms leading to the formation of coke during thermal hydrocracking of bitumen are discussed. The presence of two structurally different cokes in the thermal hydrocracker is attributed to differences in coking properties of the asphaltenes and the heavy aromatic oils of the bitumen. The chemical structure of the asphaltenes and heavy oils is reviewed with the aim of establishing some relationship between their structure and the type of coke formed when they are carbonized"--Abstract, p. i.
