Bioaccumulation of halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons in C57B116 and DBA12 mice following consumption of Great Lakes coho salmon (Oncorynchus kisuch) / Glenn B. Cleland, Barry G. Oliver, and Ronald A.... : En13-5/86-63E-PDF

"The bioaccumulation patterns of halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons in C5781/6 and DBA/2 mice following consumption of coho salmon from the Great Lakes were studied. Gas chromatographic analysis indicated a concentration gradient of polychlorinated biphenyl isomers and congeners in Great Lakes salmon with relatively low levels of fish from Lake Erie and the highest levels in Lake Ontario salmon. A similar bioaccumulation pattern was observed in mouse livers following consumption of Great Lakes fish. In general, the levels of both total PCBs and of individual isomers and congeners were higher in C5781/6 than in DBA/2 mice. The bioaccumulation factors increased with increasing chlorine substitution of the PCB congeners. Potentially toxic PCB congeners preferentially bioaccumulated in liver tissues of both mouse strains"--Executive summary.
