"Freshwater barrier ponds play a unique role in the coastal zone, primarily because they provide an important link between salt and freshwater ecosystems and are often the only source of nearby freshwater along the coast. Transitional visitors such as migratory birds use freshwater barrier ponds to replenish themselves after their long transatlantic flights. They also provide an extremely important freshwater breeding habitat for waterfowl such as Black Duck and Green-winged Teal."--page 4.
