Petroleum is a fossil fuel that occurs naturally, and is produced from the decay of plant material. But this plant material actually originated in the ancient seas of the planet as tiny aquatic organisms. Over countless millions of years, immeasurable numbers of these organisms were incorporated into marine sedimentary rocks. As time progressed, natural physical and chemical forces acted on this material to eventually form petroleum.
