Strategy for a Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network / T.B. Reynoldson [and seven others]. : En13-5/99-248E-PDF

"Canada has major, cumulative environmental problems that affect freshwater ecosystems. These problems can best be detected and described through biomonitoring and bioassessment. However, currently there is a patchwork of biomonitoring efforts that does not address cumulative environmental change over large parts of the country. Canadians are presently becoming aware of the effects of several years of cutbacks to environmental programs, and are identifying important but neglected areas that deserve increased attention. Here we propose the implementation of a federally coordinated Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network (CABIN) to address this need. Environment Canada would be the natural leader for such a program. The report and its recommendations represent a consensus of Environment Canada regional headquarters and Department of Fisheries and Oceans representatives for a national biomonitoring program for Canada"--Management perspective.
