Current North American trends in river ice research / by S. Beltaos. : En13-5/87-162E-PDF

"A brief review of river ice processes and associated understanding is presented, to serve as background for the research trends described next. Two types of trends are identified, trends in approach and trends in specific topics being studied; The latter category includes such problems as the dynamic evolution of frazil ice crystals; two-dimensionality of frazil accumulations; fracture hydrodynamic of the winter ice Cover and breakup; hydro-thermal aspects of ice jams; and the configuration, of breakup jams near the toe (or downstream end). Important questions that are thought to require more attention, e.g. ice effects on aquatic life, are discussed briefly. Approach-type trends include the use of sophisticated computer models that enable analysis of complex and interdependent processes; efforts to simulate and study hydro-thermal and hydro-structural phenomena in the laboratory; and improvements in remote sensing instrumentation to measure key parameters in the field where access is often unsafe and conventional methods are laborious"--Abstract.
