Design considerations for subaqueous capping in Hamilton Harbour : impact velocity of sand and sand penetration into very soft cohesive sediments / A.J. Zeman and J.E. Graham. : En13-5/91-26E-PDF
"The present report is written in preparation for a pilot-scale capping project in Hamilton Harbour where the contaminant state of the sediments has been found to exceed Provincial Guidelines for unrestricted open-water disposal. Most of the sediments in the Harbour consist of very soft porous silty clays, which are easily disturbed by placement of capping material. Sand has been selected for capping for its ability to be spread evenly on the bottom and for the stability of sand against erosion by expected bottom currents. The report investigates impact velocities of sand during placement and the amount of penetration of the sand cap into the bottom sediment. The results presented in the report will be verified during a monitoring program which will play an essential part of the demonstration project"--Management perspective.
