"Lake levels in the Erie basin are driven by three major factors: postglacial isostatic rebound of the crust at their outlets, regional hydrological and climatic changes, and to a less dramatic extent, by long-term neotectonic movements of a continental nature. Under the influence of the above factors, Lake Erie undergone a complex history of rises, declines, and stability since the close of the glacial period some 12 000 years ago. From a low-level stage more than 50 m below present levels, the lake has risen to its present stage"--Introduction, page 1.
