Metal pollution, transport and toxicity from abandoned gold mine tailing(s) at Goldenville, Nova Scotia / by H.K.T. Wong and A. Gauthier. : En13-5/98-149E-PDF
"Approximately 3 x 10⁹ kg of relic gold mine tailings is the result of gold mining activities in the Goldenville area of Nova Scotia from 1860 to 1945. Mercury amalgamation was the primary method used for gold recovery. Tailings were distributed over time across a stream basin forming a tailing field of approximately 2 km². Metal content in stream waters, stream and lake sediments, tailings, suspended particulates and lower vegetation in the area was determined and their toxicity Results indicated continuous release of As, Hg, Pb, Tl and other metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, V, Zn) being released from the tailing field and their transport downstream. Sedimentary records showed increasing fates of metal deposition which corresponds to increasing rates of release from the tailings. Stream waters and lake sediments downstream from the mine were found toxic to the benthic community. A loss of fish habitat was observed"--Abstract.
