Management facilities for control of urban runoff by infiltration / J. Marsalek, National Water Research Institute, Environment Canada. : En13-5/98-44E-PDF

"Urbanization reduces infiltration of rainwater into the ground, and thereby increases the generation of surface runoff. Such processes can be reversed by infiltrating runoff into the ground at special infiltration facilities. Various types of such facilities are reviewed, with emphasis on their purpose, feasibility, design, and environmental benefits as well as impacts. Well-designed infiltration facilities can be used to infiltrate relatively clean or pretreated runoff from urban areas and produce such benefits as enhanced groundwater recharge and baseflows in small streams, and reduced runoff volumes, peaks and pollution loads. For larger areas or in cold climate, infiltration facilities should be combined with storage facilities for runoff detention. The main concerns in the design and implementation of infiltration facilities are their operating life and the prevention of contamination of groundwater and soils"--Abstract.
