5203 |a"Archaeological excavations continued at Lower Fort Garry in 1971. Efforts were made to locate the 1873 fence line associated with the engineer's cottage, but the results were inconclusive. A nearby privy was located and partially excavated. Part of a palisade and all entrances to the penitentiary were examined. The interior of the penitentiary was excavated, providing data on its construction and the subterranean cells in it. The hardware and wood recovered from the cells in 1968 and 1971 were studied in detail. The brewery-distillery-storehouse was also re-excavated and construction details noted. Minor work was done on the malt barn-grist mill-sawmill."--Abstract, page 2.
