"Nominal catches of pollock have consistently exceeded the TAC since 1977: the 1980 provisional nominal catch was 55,000 mt. Canadian R.V. survey and commercial catch rates indicate substantial increases in stock size since 1976, whilst U.S.A. R.V. surveys indicate relative stability. Three year running averages of Canadian commercial catch rates in June-July and August for both TC4 and TCS were used to fine tune cohort analysis for ages 5 and older. The average partial recruitment for ages 2 to 4 between 1973 and 1976 was used to estimate the sizes of the 1976 to 1978 year-classes. A 1980 fully recruited fishing mortality of F = 0.275, with the P. R. vector mentioned above, was found to best represent the 1980 stock status. Projections at F0 1 in 1981 and 1982 indicate catches of 54,000 and 55,000 mt respectively, whereas the 1982 F0 1 catch would be 58,000 mt if the presently set 1981 TAC (40,000 mt) is not exceeded"--Abstract.
