"The aim of this paper is to present the research and development program in machine-aided translation undertaken by the Canadian Workplace Automation Research Centre (CWARC) of the federal Department of Communications. We justify this program in terms of our assessment of the current state of the art in machine translation (MT). In the short and medium terms, this program calls for the development of translator's workstations and of sublanguage-specific machine translation systems. In the longer term, it includes a research component in which the latest techniques in artificial intelligence will be applied to the problem of translation, in order to produce more powerful MT systems"--Abstract.
