Development of a benthic invertebrate objective for mesotrophic Great Lakes / Trefor B. Reynoldson, D.W. Schloesser and B.A. Manny. : En13-5/89-02E-PDF

"The desirable characteristics of a biological indicator of mesotrophic conditions are: that it should provide an appropriate and interpretable endpoint; that it should be achievable if corrective measure are taken, that is it should be within the environmental continuum; and that progress towards the objective can be measured. Historical data bases from the Great Lakes suggest that Hexagenia limbata, provides an appropriate endpoint, that the tubificid oligochaete community can be used to determine recovery, and data from other systems shows that Hexagenia can return to locations where it was formerly abundant"--Abstract.
