"Widespread concern about the toxicity and environmental distribution of the polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) has led to a requirement for the quantitative analysis of ever-increasing numbers of environmental samples for the presence of these persistent contaminants. Such demands are likely to increase, rather than diminish, in the future. Furthermore, similar demands will probably arise for other classes of trace contaminants"--Introduction, page 1.
