"The Eastern Scotian Shelf cod stock complex has recovered surprisingly fast from the high exploitation rates it sustained during the first part of the seventies. Preliminary nominal catches for 1981 are 53,661 mt, continuing the regular increase started in 1978. A standardization of commercial catch rates for Canadian (Maritimes) and Spanish boats in that fishery was performed. That catch rate along with R/V ages 5+ population estimates were used to calibrate ages 5+ COHORT. This indicated a 1981 fully recruited fishing mortality of 0.225. COHORT population estimates at age 4 were adjusted with commercial C.P.U.E. at age 4 while partial recruitment on ages 1 to 3 was adjusted to give year-class sizes at age 1 approximately equal to the long-term geometric mean. Projections at F0.1 indicated 1983 catches of 64,000 mt if the 1982 catches are equal to the 50,000 mt TAC."
