| 520 | 3 |a"The purpose of this report is to record the history of all fords, ferries and bridges crossing the navigation channel of the Trent Severn Waterway. The record includes the details of the types of ferries and bridges at each location, when they were erected, modified or replaced and for what reason. To substantiate the reasons for construction and change, a general survey is made of the physical characteristics of the waterway before canalization, the canoe routes used, and the forms and routes of land transportation (road and rail) in the vicinity of the waterway. Settlement of the area, lumbering and agriculture are also mentioned. The construction of the locks and canals that make up the waterway is briefly outlined as it affects bridge construction. The various roles of bridges in the community is mentioned also. The major portion of the report traces chronologically the construction of the bridges in six geographic sections. The specific technical details about each are contained in the appendix. The final section contains an examination of the evolution of bridge design along the waterway based on the information and statistics evolved in the study and on the state of the art elsewhere in Canada and the U.S.A. during the same period."--Abstract, page viii. |
