5203 |a"The analysis of large volume water samples collected over a four week period in 1987 at the mouths of the Yamaska and Saint-François Rivers revealed the presence of PCBs and many pesticides which had not been detected previously in either of these two rivers. Most of the chemicals determined were found in the centrifuged water as opposed to the suspended solids, a phenomenon explained by the low to medium lipophilicity of the chemicals in question. In general, there were more pesticides in the Yamaska River than in the Saint-François River, a finding which was expected since agriculture is more prominent in the basin of the former river. Although the atrazine concentration by far surpassed the levels of the other chemicals determined, it did not exceed the proposed water quality guideline for atrazine of 2 ug/L for the protection of aquatic life"--Abstract.
