520 |a"The importance of bacteria in the aquatic environment has been known for decades, especially on rock surfaces and in sediments. The stumbling block to detailed research has been methodology. Recently, bacterial productivity has been measured by following the incorporation of tritiated thymidine into bacterial DNA. This technique was originally designed for water, but has been extended to sediments in the recent literature. This manuscript outlines modifications to the technique so that it can be used to measure the bacterial production on the surface of rocks (epilithic bacterial production)"--Management Perspective.
