The rise and fall of leaded gasoline / J.O. Nriagu. : En13-5/90-07E-PDF
"Leaded gasoline has become one of the few 'environmentally unsafe'products to be forced out of the market place. The history of lead additives in gasoline is outlined, from the discovery of the antiknock properties of tetraethyl lead in 1921 [the first gallon of leaded gasoline was sold on February 2, 1923 to a motorist in Dayton, Ohio] to recent measures to remove lead from the gasoline of the 1980's. This report provides an historical backdrop to the continuing debate on environmental lead pollution"--Abstract.
