Influence of trophic status on the behaviour of contaminants in aquatic systems / R.M. Baxter [and three others]. : En13-5/90-26E-PDF
"The problems of eutrophication through nutrient enrichment and contamination with persistent contaminants have traditionally been regarded as unrelated by water scientists and managers, but recently evidence has appeared suggesting that the fate of organic contaminants in an aquatic ecosystem influenced by the trophic state of the system. There is also evidence that the dissolved organic matter in dystrophic, or humic, waters may influence contaminant dynamics. Mechanisms that may be involved include changes in the metabolic capabilities of organisms with changes in trophic state; reductive degradation in the anoxic hypolimnia of highly productive waters; binding of contaminants by dissolved organic matter or organisms, or photochemical degradation induced by light-absorbing molecules. The possible significance of these processes is discussed"--Abstract.
