"Alkylphenol polyethoxylate surfactants (APEs) are commonly used in various industrial, commercial, institutional and consumer applications. They are relatively inexpensive and efficient nonionic surfactants. Canadian consumption of these substances amounted to 19,000 tonnes in 1996 (Environment Canada and Health Canada, 2001). As a direct consequence of their widespread use patterns, these substances can be found in various effluent streams that enter municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) before entering the receiving environment"--Introduction, page 3.
