"The Canadian Army’s Soldier System 2030 plan will take advantage of advancements in technologies and materials to provide the most effective equipment to the dismounted soldier. This includes lightweight armour with improved performance. It has been postulated in the literature that negative Poisson’s ratio, auxetic materials may find application in an armour system, providing impact protection or behind armour blunt trauma mitigation. During the past four years, Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) has been exploring as a proof-of-concept, the physical properties of regular open cell polyurethane foams, compressed to form re-entrant structures"--Abstract.
