Effect of de-icing salts on the chemistry and toxicity of highway runoff / T. Mayer [and 5 others]. : En36-518/98-005E-PDF
"Chemical and toxicological characterization of highway runoff was carried out to investigate seasonal effects on highway runoff quality. The most notable variation in toxic responses was attributable to the presence of de-icing salt. The runoff samples which exhibited severe acute toxicity using a Daphnia magna lethality tests, had high concentrations of road salt constituents Na and CI. The concentrations of these ions varied by four orders of magnitude over the investigated period"--Abstract.
