"Cootes Paradise, a coastal wetland at the westernmost point of Lake Ontario, has been exploited and altered for many decades. Rapid growth of population and associated changes in land use, particularly in 20th century led to deterioration of water quality in the marsh. High turbidity and prolific algal growth were identified as major factors responsible for water quality degradation (Lougheed et al., 1998)"--Introduction, page 1.
