The ability of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) to remove polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) from an incinerator fly ash sample was investigated employing supercritical nitrous oxide and its mixtures with methanol, and toluene. The use of a virtually inert fluid such as pure nitrous oxide provides significant improvement over conventional extraction procedures in that no solvent residue is left in the processed extract. Recoveries of individual PCDD congeners were calculated from the analysis of C-13 labelled dioxins employing selected ion monitoring high resolution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HRGC/MS)"--Abstract.</marc:subfield>
