Potential use of crown pillar pit in a demonstration project of the feasibility of subaqueous disposal of acid generating metal mine tailings / Pierre Brassard and Alena Mudroch. : En13-5/94-04E-PDF
"A simple model is proposed to predict the rate of oxidation of metal mine tailings disposed on the bottom of a meromictic pit at a mining site near Ignace, Ontario. The consumption of oxygen in the pit water by disposed tailings is limited by diffusion across the thermocline, and can only reach a maximum value depending on the depth and morphometry of the pit. The standard acid-base accounting method is used to characterize the neutralization potential of the disposed tailings. Theoretical calculation shows that the amount of calcite needed to neutralize the generated acid by oxidation of the tailings has to be considered, and is related to the desired ambient pH"--Abstract, page 2.
