"The dynamics of algal growth and algal bloom development in eutrophic prairie lakes and reservoirs offers an opportunity to assess the negative consequences of exponential growth and its sustainable and unsustainable phase. Extreme situations of ecological perturbation and instability, where the structure and function of an aquatic ecosystem breaks down, are demonstrated using summary results from lakes undergoing collapse (crashes) of algal blooms or winter anoxia as a result of unsustainable productivity"--Abstract.
