Consolidation of very soft sediments due to subaqueous capping / A.J. Zeman. : En13-5/92-67E-PDF

"The magnitudes and rates of settlements due to the load applied by a subaqueous cap, which rests on a very compressible cohesive-sediment substratum, were analyzed using the classical (Terzaghi) consolidation analysis and the finite strain analysis. Large oedometer test with pore pressure measurements were used to determine void ratio effective stress and void ratio-permeability relationships. It is shown that both methods predict identical settlements; however, substantially faster rates of consolidation are predicted by the finite strain theory than by the classical theory of consolidation. The results are being incorporated into design considerations for a pilot-scale demonstration project of subaqueous capping in Hamilton Harbour"--Abstract.
